February 2nd 2011 Alarm #12 - 1177 Route 18 East Brunswick - At approximately 06:50 hours a township general alarm was transmitted for a structure fire in a one-story strip mall within Fire District 1's jurisdiction (the initial dispatch was for an activated fire alarm). First arriving crews were met with heavy fire conditions coming from the Planet Bike store. As fire conditions intensified Incident Commander Twomey (750) had crews shift to defensive operations, placing District # 1 Ladder 709 and District # 2 Ladder 809 into service. After approximately one hour firefighters from all three township fire districts we able to bring the blaze under control. Weather conditions made firefighting efforts difficult from the onset of the incident as crews had to deal with a fresh coating of ice on top of a significant snowpack.  Additionally, fire hydrants were tough to locate given the sizeable snowpack, further complicating operations. Brookview Engine's 902 and 903, along with Rescue 905 operated at the fire scene. Additional information, including photos from the incident can be found at
